WellMate is a private, supportive space where you can talk about how you're feeling and care for your wellbeing. This Privacy Policy explains what information the WellMate mobile application (the "App") collects, how we use it, how we protect it, and the choices you have. We built this policy around a simple idea: collect as little as possible, and protect what we hold.
The App is operated by Learn Afghan Inc. ("we," "us," or "our"). By creating an account or using WellMate, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and a password (stored only in encrypted/hashed form — we never see your actual password). If you choose to sign in using a social login such as Google or Apple, we receive basic profile information (such as your name and email) from that provider, as permitted by your settings with them.
WellMate includes an optional Mindful Movement feature that measures your steps and physical activity. This feature uses your device's motion and fitness sensors (such as the step counter) to estimate movement and distance. It does not use GPS and does not track your geographic location — WellMate does not know or record where you are. This feature is optional; you can use the rest of the App, including the assistant, without enabling it, and you can turn off motion and fitness access at any time in your device settings.
WellMate includes an AI assistant that lets you talk about what you're feeling or experiencing. When you use it, the messages you send are transmitted to our AI provider (OpenAI) so that a response can be generated for you. These conversations are used only to provide the assistant's replies to you. We do not use them for advertising, we do not sell them, and we do not share them with anyone for their own purposes. (See Section 4 for more detail.)
WellMate is a wellbeing app, so you may choose to share information about how you're feeling. We treat everything you share as sensitive and handle it with care, using it only to provide the App's features to you as described in this policy.
To keep the App working, secure, and reliable, we (and our service providers such as Firebase) may automatically collect limited technical information, such as your device type and operating system, app version, general app-usage and diagnostic data, and crash reports. This information helps us fix problems and improve the App. It is not used to advertise to you.
We use the information we collect only to:
We do not use your account, activity, or conversation information for advertising, and we never sell it.
If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your personal information under the following legal bases:
Because wellbeing information can be sensitive, where required we rely on your explicit consent to process it, which you may withdraw at any time by contacting us or deleting your account.
We know the conversations you have in WellMate can be deeply personal, and we treat them that way.
WellMate relies on a small number of trusted service providers to operate:
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party for their own marketing or business purposes.
With your permission, we may send push notifications such as gentle reminders or updates. Notifications are written to be discreet. You can turn them off at any time in your device settings or within the App.
We keep your information only for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the App to you, unless a longer period is required by law.
You may request deletion of your account and personal information at any time by contacting us at info@learnafghan.org, or by using any in-app account-deletion option where available. Once we receive your request, we will delete your personal information in accordance with applicable law, except where we are required to retain certain information.
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect your information. Passwords are stored in hashed form, and information transmitted between the App and our services is encrypted in transit. We limit internal access to personal information to those who need it to operate the App. While we take these steps to protect your information, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
WellMate is intended for individuals 14 years of age and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 14. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 14 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at info@learnafghan.org and we will take appropriate steps to remove it.
If you are between 14 and 18 (or the age of majority where you live), we encourage you to review this policy with a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult, and to use WellMate with their awareness where you are able to. We handle information belonging to younger users with particular care and only as described in this policy.
WellMate is a supportive space, but it is not an emergency service and does not replace professional care. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, please reach out to a trusted person, a local health professional, or your local emergency services right away. WellMate can sit alongside that help — it is not a substitute for it.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal information under laws such as the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to:
We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights. To make a request, contact us using the details in Section 14. You also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.
WellMate is operated from the United States, and our servers and central database are located there. If you use the App from outside the United States — including from Afghanistan, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or elsewhere — your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, which may have different data-protection rules than your home country. Where required by law, we take steps to ensure such transfers are handled lawfully.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you within the App. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of the App after an update takes effect means you accept the revised policy.
